DESCRIPTION:

LaunchMemphis is a non-profit that fuels an entrepreneurial community. We provide programming and resources to innovators with bold ideas, and help them convert their concepts into solid and sustainable business models. Information about our season programming can be found on our website.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

•   Support LaunchMemphis social media profiles in accordance with brand standards and strategy; this includes daily posting, live tweeting events, publishing photos and videos, and promoting events.

•   Draft content for our website, including pre- and post-event coverage, startup profiles and other topics connected to entrepreneurship and innovation.

•   Draft content as needed for bi-monthly newsletters and announcements.

•   Take photographs, record short videos and capture quotes and stories at events.

•   Help maintain the Founders Toolkit, a set of documents used with our entrepreneurs, workshops and startup programming (e.g., BOOSTcamp, 48 Hour Launch).

•   Enter and maintain data as needed in our database, including media outreach and articles, mailing list members and event attendance.

•   Produce media alerts as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

•   Roughly 10-15 hours per week; hours can be flexible to a student’s schedule but you must be available for some evening and weekend activities.

•   Strong communications skills and interpersonal savvy.

•   The ability to multitask, learn on the fly and thrive in a fast-paced environment.

•   Project management skills to see tasks through completion and on time.

•   Familiarity with basic office software (e.g., Microsoft Word or equivalent), photo editing (e.g., iPhoto, Photoshop), and social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter).

•   Familiarity with any of the following preferred: video editing software (e.g., iMovie, Final Cut Pro), advanced or emerging social media platforms (e.g., RebelMouse, Storify), blogging software (e.g., WordPress), databases (e.g., Salesforce), document layout and design (e.g., Publisher, In Design).

Frayser Community Development Corporation Community Newsletter-intern

Title: Frayser Community Development Corporation Community Newsletter-intern

Description: Intern will assist Frayser CDC and other community-based organizations in producing and distributing a monthly newsletter. Frayser CDC is a stable, aggressive community-based nonprofit development corporation. The CDC focuses on housing renovation for sale and rent, as well as home ownership training, financial literacy and foreclosure counseling. The CDC also does some commercial redevelopment as well as policy advocacy on behalf of the community.

While the Frayser community is very dynamic, communication is weak. The CDC has committed funds to produce a quality newsletter to be used by numerous community-based groups and businesses in order to improve the flow of information in Frayser.

This position is unpaid, but will be a good opportunity for the right journalism student.

Responsibilities: The internship is part-time position, 15-20 hours per week.
The newsletter will be 8 pages long. 6,000 copies will be distributed, as well as posted on line. The CDC intern will:

· Assist with formation of an editorial board
· Solicit content/articles from neighborhood contributors
· Edit content within guidelines set by editorial board
· Manage layout and printing
· Assist with sales and layout of newsletter ads
· Coordinate distribution including mailings and community distribution locations

Minimum Qualifications: Requirements– training and experience in journalism, strong writing skills, ability to work with a diverse neighborhood, good time management skills, the ability to work independently, computer expertise, ability to meet deadlines and attend to details.

The University of Memphis Scholarship Committee has provided funding for several undergraduate awards for Access and Diversity Internships for Summer 2012. Selected students will be provided the opportunity to work with a campus or community partner to enhance the student’s career preparation and to assist in the organization’s efforts to offer appropriate services and/or products to clients.

If you are interested in applying for an internship, please review the information below and submit the attached application form by February 3, 2012.

Who is eligible to apply for an award for an internship?

Undergraduate students who meet the following criteria:

  • are Tennessee Residents (Paid in-state tuition for Spring 2012)
  • have a minimum of 60 earned hours at time of application
  • have a minimum of 3.00 grade point average at time of application

AND

What does an internship require?

Students selected for an Access and Diversity Award for Internship are required to:

  • participate in an Internship Preparation Workshop
  • complete an approved internship learning contract and register for an
    o   Internship Course in Academic Major or
    o   UNIV 4000 – Community Internship
  • work 150 clock hours during the summer (June 4 – August 9)
  • present internship experience at Student Affairs Access/Diversity Support Awards for Internships Recognition Event

What do selected students receive?

  • Selected students will receive a summer award of $1500 to apply towards the cost of tuition and fees, including those fees related to an academic internship.  After ALL fees have been satisfied for the semester, any excess aid will be released to the student by either direct deposit or paper check. Please refer to the Bursar’s Office Calendar for disbursement dates.

Where do selected interns work?

Students who are selected to receive the Student Affairs Access/Diversity Support Awards for Internships may work with a campus or community partner such as the Fogelman College of Business & Economics, Memphis Zoo, Memphis Botanic Gardens, Memphis Red Cross, College of Engineering, College of Arts and Sciences, Athletics, Memphis Area Women’s Council, etc.

City of Memphis Urban Fellows Internship – DEADLINE WEDNESDAY

The Urban Fellows is a year-round initiative that offers local college students the opportunity to intern with various divisions of City of Memphis government. The program serves primarily to enhance the interaction of area college students with the City, advancing the purpose of getting students to consider employment after graduation – ultimately making Memphis their permanent home.
