Investigative Journalism Internship

The Center for Public Integrity is looking for ambitious undergraduate and graduate students or recent graduates for a 10-week, paid summer internship in Washington, D.C. The Center is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that produces original, responsible investigative journalism on issues of public concern. A motivating factor for our internship program is to help train and inspire the next generation of investigative reporters.

Interns will assist reporters in producing investigative stories and projects on a wide range of subjects that may include: money and politics, national security, government accountability, environment, financial reform, and health care.

Interns with appropriate experience may be assigned to our web or data departments. Please note any computer-assisted reporting or multimedia skills.

Qualified candidates should have some reporting experience, strong writing skills, and a desire to pursue the types of issues we cover. Demonstrated interest in investigative or entrepreneurial reporting a plus.

In cooperation with The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars, the University of Memphis is pleased to announce a unique opportunity for students to work and study in our nation’s capital.  The Washington Center (http://www.twc.edu) maintains ties with thousands of organizations–governmental, nonprofit, corporate, and international–that can provide high quality internships in Washington, D.C.

Recognizing the potential for internships to enrich students’ educational experiences and professional preparation, the Tennessee Board of Regents has agreed to provide funds to assist students accepted for internships with The Washington Center. During Fall 2013 each student enrolled in the program may earn 12 – 15 hours of undergraduate academic credit.

Who can apply?

Applicants to this program may come from any major, as long as they hold a GPA of 2.75 or better and are at least second-semester sophomores. Those undergraduate students accepted by The Washington Center are assigned, according to their interests, to one of the following thematically organized programs:

  • Advocacy, Service and Arts
  • Business and Management
  • Global Trade and Regional Integration
  • International Affairs
  • Law and Criminal Justice
  • Media and Communication
  • Political Leadership
  • Science, Technology and Society

Please note: This internship will not cost any more than a regular semester at the U of M if the student is staying on campus and has a meal plan. While interns will pay U of M tuition and fees, they will also receive about $6,000 in financial assistance for The Washington Center’s housing and program fees.  All U of M financial aid arrangements (Hope Scholarship, University scholarships, etc.) remain in effect.

Application Procedures: Deadline November 2, 2012

1. Visit www.twc.edu for additional information about The Washington Center.

2. Consult with your academic advisor to determine how this experience would fit into your degree program.

3. Complete (do not submit) the online application form http://portal.e.twc.edu/  including the Resume, Issues Essay, Statement of Professional Interest, Names and email addresses of two individuals agreeing to submit letters of recommendation.

4. By November 2 submit to Dixie Crase in Manning Hall, Room 404 the following items:

  • Print copy of completed online application including the Resume, Issues Essay, and Statement of Professional Interest
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Official Transcript

By December 1 students will be notified regarding the status of their applications. Applications will be reviewed by a panel of University administrators and faculty. The University will select five students to recommend for admission to the Fall 2013 program. Students recommended for admission will be required to submit an application fee.
