Media & Comm Internships, Washington, DC (Expenses Paid)



In cooperation with The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars, the University of Memphis is pleased to announce a unique opportunity for students to work and study in our nation’s capital.  The Washington Center ( maintains ties with thousands of organizations–governmental, nonprofit, corporate, and international–that can provide high quality internships in Washington, D.C.

Recognizing the potential for internships to enrich students’ educational experiences and professional preparation, the Tennessee Board of Regents has agreed to provide funds to assist students accepted for internships with The Washington Center. During Fall 2013 each student enrolled in the program may earn 12 – 15 hours of undergraduate academic credit.

Who can apply?

Applicants to this program may come from any major, as long as they hold a GPA of 2.75 or better and are at least second-semester sophomores. Those undergraduate students accepted by The Washington Center are assigned, according to their interests, to one of the following thematically organized programs:

  • Advocacy, Service and Arts
  • Business and Management
  • Global Trade and Regional Integration
  • International Affairs
  • Law and Criminal Justice
  • Media and Communication
  • Political Leadership
  • Science, Technology and Society

Please note: This internship will not cost any more than a regular semester at the U of M if the student is staying on campus and has a meal plan. While interns will pay U of M tuition and fees, they will also receive about $6,000 in financial assistance for The Washington Center’s housing and program fees.  All U of M financial aid arrangements (Hope Scholarship, University scholarships, etc.) remain in effect.

Application Procedures: Deadline November 2, 2012

1. Visit for additional information about The Washington Center.

2. Consult with your academic advisor to determine how this experience would fit into your degree program.

3. Complete (do not submit) the online application form  including the Resume, Issues Essay, Statement of Professional Interest, Names and email addresses of two individuals agreeing to submit letters of recommendation.

4. By November 2 submit to Dixie Crase in Manning Hall, Room 404 the following items:

  • Print copy of completed online application including the Resume, Issues Essay, and Statement of Professional Interest
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Official Transcript

By December 1 students will be notified regarding the status of their applications. Applications will be reviewed by a panel of University administrators and faculty. The University will select five students to recommend for admission to the Fall 2013 program. Students recommended for admission will be required to submit an application fee.

American Junior Golf Association Internships

The AJGA is seeking a Public Relations, Journalism or Mass Communications major to assist the in-house communications staff of a nonprofit golf association with daily communications tasks. International Paper’s Marketing Services group provides creative support in the areas of advertising, graphic design, photography sourcing and strategic marketing communications company-wide. This internship is designed to provide experience by performing basic graphic design, photography manipulation and print production tasks for a variety of businesses.

Scope/Job Responsibilities:
Perform graphic design functions that include creative development and production of such items as marketing/communications collateral, meeting materials, web and other quick turn projects.

Suggested projects could include the following:
• Create new PowerPoint templates
• Support senior graphic designer with projects (development & editing of marketing and communications materials or other graphics using existing templates)
• Process jobs through the in-house digital and off-set print shop center
• Organize the print resource library to ensure current items are available
• Support graphic needs for the web
• Attend print production job with our print production specialist

Experience or Skill Requirements (basic level of competency):

• Minimum GPA: 3.00
• Adobe Creative Suite (In-design, Photoshop)
• Experience with Microsoft PPT and Word (Excel a plus)
• Demonstrated basic graphic design skills
• Self-starter requiring minimal supervision

Estimated Time Requirements
• As appropriate to qualify for course credit. Estimated to be 10-12 hours a week. Days or times are flexible
• Note: We already have an established work room with computer and other related equipment available for immediate use
