Memphis Area Legal Services (MALS), in partnership with RedRover Sales & Marketing, is offering one University of Memphis journalism student the opportunity to participate in a spring 2013 internship for course credit. The selected student will have a unique opportunity for significant skill development and resume-building experience. Responsibilities include:

  • Managing the MALS Facebook and Twitter profiles — from posting original content to sharing/re-tweeting content from other related organizations/influencers to interacting with key influencers through these channels on behalf of the organization. The ultimate goal is to increase the fan/follower base significantly prior to the general public campaign launch next year.
  • Writing and distributing press releases to the media, making follow-up pitches where appropriate.
  • Writing newsletter and email campaign copy.
  • Designing newsletter and email campaigns (dependent upon candidate’s skills).
  • Supporting the organization’s fundraising efforts from a communications and marketing perspective.

The selected intern will be given significant access to the organization’s Executive Director and senior team, including the IT and Development Directors, but will also be given the freedom to drive the MALS marketing and PR effort with a degree of autonomy unique to an intern position.  In addition, the PR intern will be partnered with a law graduate intern to execute the organization’s marketing and PR strategy collectively, offering both interns additional unique development opportunities.

Special consideration will be given to candidates with significant social media experience (e.g., either as part of another internship or individuals with strong Facebook and Twitter followings of their own). Candidates should also have strong writing and pitching abilities.

RedRover Sales & Marketing has selected MALS as its pro bono nonprofit of choice for the 2012 and 2013 calendar years. As such, RedRover will be developing the MALS marketing and PR plan for 2013 – the blue print under which the newly hired intern will operate. In addition, RedRover will be offering the selected intern the opportunity to shadow RedRover during his or her first week on the job – time spent with each member of the RedRover team (one on one), including the CEO, to better understand their roles within the agency and to collect suggestions for promoting the MALS organization. Additionally, RedRover will schedule time with the intern once a month as a follow-up training opportunity.

About MALS: Memphis Area Legal Services is the primary provider of civil legal representation to low-income families in Western Tennessee. The organization helps individuals and families facing critical, situations such as domestic violence, mortgage foreclosure or eviction, wrongful denial of healthcare, predatory lending, or consumer fraud. MALS does not accept fees for its services, relying on contributions from individual and corporate donors.

The organization just entered its fifth decade with the same commitment and determination that inspired 30 members of the legal profession in the wake of Dr. Martin Luther King’s death to coalesce around a shared vision to establish an organization whose single purpose was to provide a means by which the legal problems of the poor could be addressed.

Even with a dedicated staff, it cannot meet the overwhelming demand for legal assistance today. The challenges are more acute because the widening of the “justice gap” is exacerbated by the economic woes of our time. The recent census reveals that more than 57 million individuals live at or below the poverty line, representing more than a 14 million increase since the 2000 Decennial Census. And 26.5 percent of Memphians live in poverty.

investigative stories. They’ll give you hands-on data training, teach you

to learn some digging skills. This internship is for the 2013 spring

8. ProPublica is seeking an intern to both report and help build
community around our investigative projects with social media and
engagement tools.

The internship will begin in January and last for up to a year. It is
full-time and based in New York. Compensation is $700 per week. There is
no specific deadline for applying. We are considering applications
immediately.

Interns will be part of our investigative team focused on quick-turn
reporting that riffs off the news as well as our engagement team, which
works across social networks to build communities around our coverage and
develops crowdsourcing and social media strategies for our reporting.
Applicants should have prior journalism experience, and a demonstrated
interest in leveraging social media for newsgathering purposes.

for summer 2013 offers full-time students and recent college graduates

Science is a global activity, but the demographics of the journalists who cover it don’t reflect that diversity. The Minority Science Writers Internship is for undergraduate students who are interested in journalism as a career and who want to learn about science writing.

The Internship takes place each summer at the Washington, D.C. headquarters of AAAS’s Science magazine, the largest interdisciplinary journal in the world. Interns spend ten weeks at Science under the guidance of award-winning reporters and editors, and have a chance to experience what science writers do for a living. Interns are expected to contribute to the weekly news section, including bylined articles in the print and electronic news service.

The paid internship includes travel costs to and from the internship site in Washington, D.C. Living accommodations and expenses are the responsibility of the Intern. The Internship runs from June to mid-August.

In cooperation with The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars, the University of Memphis is pleased to announce a unique opportunity for students to work and study in our nation’s capital.  The Washington Center (http://www.twc.edu) maintains ties with thousands of organizations–governmental, nonprofit, corporate, and international–that can provide high quality internships in Washington, D.C.

Recognizing the potential for internships to enrich students’ educational experiences and professional preparation, the Tennessee Board of Regents has agreed to provide funds to assist students accepted for internships with The Washington Center. During Fall 2013 each student enrolled in the program may earn 12 – 15 hours of undergraduate academic credit.

Who can apply?

Applicants to this program may come from any major, as long as they hold a GPA of 2.75 or better and are at least second-semester sophomores. Those undergraduate students accepted by The Washington Center are assigned, according to their interests, to one of the following thematically organized programs:

We’re looking for reporters who want to cut their teeth in a great news town.

This is not the kind of internship where you fact-check other people’s work or make copies. You’ll be a full- time reporter working on the newspaper’s news staff. We offer the right amount of training and freedom for a young journalist to move up and learn. We want our interns to not only be able to run down breaking crime but also be to do insightful profiles and hard-hitting breaking news.

If you’re good, you’ll have a shot at getting your stories on the front page. If you’re great, you’ll have a shot at investigative work and narrative writing. The ideal candidate is a self-starter with strong reporting and writing skills. You must be able to cover breaking news as well as turn features and be comfortable writing and updating web stories throughout the day. You must be competitive and able to work on a team of reporters in a fast-paced newsroom.

Other internships and/or experience at a college newspaper are a plus.
