Under general direction, develops sources, gathers information and writes news and feature articles that are accurate, informative, balanced and entertaining. Produces material – often under tight deadline pressure and constraints – in a manner that meets the highest journalistic standards.

Key activities
- Identifies and develops news, feature and enterprise stories of interest relevant to the lives of our readers, a detailed understanding of the community and stories published, while also monitoringcompeting media (newspapers, online, radio and television) to ensure the newspaper maintains a competitive advantage.
- Develops a network of formal and informal sources throughout the community to help develop and write stories as well as providing background information.
- Consults frequently with editors on stories. Stays on top of developing and continuing stories.
- Writes stories, often under deadline pressure, always striving to be fair, thorough and accurate and using correct grammar and style.
- Ensure accuracy through checking facts gathered via on line information services and internet.
- Meets established deadlines.
- Suggests photos and graphics to make stories compelling and clearly explain the news.
- Cooperates to cover breaking news.
- Backs up other reporters on their beats and writes assigned stories for special sections and publications.
- Contributes through constructive criticism to the improvement of the editorial product especially the writing.
- Demonstrates an in-depth working knowledge of the theories and applications of professional journalism and a basic command of the English language to include the ability to spell correctly, write clearly and exercise proper use of grammar, such as typically acquired in earning a Bachelors degree, preferably in journalism, or equivalent professional newspaper experience. 2 – 5 years experience in designated field.
- Demonstrates effective and diplomatic oral and written communication skills. Demonstrates knowledge of computers and ability.
- Knowledge of libel laws as well as state and federal laws regarding open meetings, open records and access to information, sufficient to direct quality editorial coverage and make legally-sound decisions on publication of content.
- Must maintain valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, company required auto insurance and an acceptable driving record.

Work environment
- Sitting for prolonged periods of time while inputting into and working at computer (making continuous use of near vision), driving to assignments and covering events.
- Stamina to work varied shifts and extended periods of time at the keyboard.
- Dexterity to type on a computer.
- Ability to concentrate for long periods of time.
- Mobility to travel to, and cover, events outside the newspaper.
- Communicate by phone and in person.
- Observe events and situations that are subjects of stories.

Leadership Memphis, INTERN

INTERN POSITION

Description
Leadership Memphis internships are non-paid, academic internships where students gain more than just work experience. They build connections between concepts from the classroom and real-world situations in the non-profit arena. We work with our interns to develop a signature project that helps them utilize and further develop key business skills, and can be completed within the time frame of their internship. This signature project gives them a tangible deliverable they can be proud of, and is a valuable addition to their resume.

Also, Leadership Memphis interns get to refine their professional ethics, professional values, and act as individual contributors on projects that have a positive impact on the community. Although students are not paid for their work, our internships are designed to ensure a valuable professional experience.

Schedule
Interns work 10-20 hours per week during the fall or spring semester depending on the student’s schedule. At the beginning of the semester, interns will work with the assigned supervisors to come up with a schedule of days and times to constitute a standard schedule. Deviations can be made with notice.

Interns will be assigned a supervisor in a particular area – communications, development, programs, alumni engagement, etc.

Duties will vary by department but can include:
- Research and create email distribution and mailing lists
- Research and create media lists for active pitching
- Materials development (pitches, backgrounders, briefing documents)
- Media monitoring for our organization
- Social media monitoring and posting
- Selective media outreach
- Assist with annual signature events
- Attend our program classes to collect information from participants, and take photos
- Data entry (some sensitive information may require signing a memorandum of confidentiality)
- Answering the phone and making calls
- Assisting with copying, filing, and mailings
- Research on the internet or in publications
- Writing research summaries or compiling meeting minutes
- Setting up for and staffing meetings and events
- Verifying email addresses for e-newsletter distribution list
- Other duties as needed

Intern–Communications

Full time internship opportunity available in Memphis, TN from June 2013 to August 2013.

Under close supervision, the successful candidate will:
- Compile and analyze outcome-based metrics data for each CSR giving area (Disaster Relief, Safety, Environment, Diversity and Education)
- Secure and compile compelling story-telling opportunities for traditional and social channels
- Provide support developing, coordinating and executing Disaster Relief, Safety, Environment, Diversity and Education programs

Investigative Journalism Internship

The Center for Public Integrity is looking for ambitious undergraduate and graduate students or recent graduates for a 10-week, paid summer internship in Washington, D.C. The Center is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that produces original, responsible investigative journalism on issues of public concern. A motivating factor for our internship program is to help train and inspire the next generation of investigative reporters.

Interns will assist reporters in producing investigative stories and projects on a wide range of subjects that may include: money and politics, national security, government accountability, environment, financial reform, and health care.

Interns with appropriate experience may be assigned to our web or data departments. Please note any computer-assisted reporting or multimedia skills.

Qualified candidates should have some reporting experience, strong writing skills, and a desire to pursue the types of issues we cover. Demonstrated interest in investigative or entrepreneurial reporting a plus.

Associate Director of Communications, Editor of Rhodes Magazine

Rhodes College is seeking a creative thinker with excellent editing, writing and storytelling skills, and extensive print and online magazine publishing expertise, to assume the position of Associate Director of Communications and Editor of Rhodes magazine. The Associate Director, Editor will develop, direct and manage the editorial and graphic design of Rhodes magazine, which publishes three times a year (fall, winter and summer) and has a circulation of 20,000.

The magazine is one of the primary engagement tools that support the relationship between the College and its alumni, parents and friends. Reporting to the Director of Communications in the Office of Communications, the Associate Director, Editor is part of a collaborative team that promotes a wide range of news and information related to Rhodes College.

The Associate Director, Editor will also assist with the development of editorial content for a wide range of additional print publications, as well as the college’s website and social media platforms.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in a related field and a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in a leadership role developing the editorial content and managing the creative direction of a magazine.
- Preference will be given to candidates with education or professional experience in news journalism and experience with higher-education communications.
- The desired candidate will demonstrate: the ability to assimilate and communicate information on a broad range of topics; editorial skills, including excellent interviewing, writing, story editing and copy editing; excellent command of Associated Press writing style; the ability to help manage and lead a creative staff; and a familiarity with all aspects of both print and online publishing, including contracting with vendors and overseeing postal requirements.
- Being an alumnus/a of Rhodes College is not a requirement for the position, though alumni are particularly invited to apply.

Memphis Child Advocacy Center

The Memphis Child Advocacy Center is well-respected agency in the Memphis/Shelby County community and is also a model child advocacy center nationwide. At the CAC, a team of highly trained child interviewers, law enforcement officers, case workers, therapists, and prosecutors work together to respond to reports of child sexual abuse and severe physical abuse. They work together as a team to ensure the best possible outcome for victimized children in terms of justice and healing. In addition, our prevention team is teaching adults across our community how to protect children, stopping sexual abuse from happening in the first place.

A special projects intern is needed. Hours are flexible and negotiable. As a not-for-profit agency, we don’t have the resources to pay a student, but can provide a great experience with meaningful projects.

Interns will receive a tour of the center (including our partner agencies), go through our online orientation, and observe some team activities as part of their orientation. We are located at 1085 Poplar Avenue, close to downtown and near I 240.

We have several projects available for a student to work on this coming semester as well as summer and fall semesters. Assignments would vary depending on the student’s skills and interests, as well as agency priorities. Here are some possible bigger and smaller projects:

- Social media campaigns
- Website content update (we are in the process of gradually updating our website pages and content)
- Assist with PRSA professional development projects (help arrange training events for PRSA members)
- If the student comes this coming semester, he or she can help with promotion of our Works of Heart valentine auction in February and our Annual Children’s Memorial Flagraising ceremony in April. If summer, they can help with our annual Honors Day celebration and probable August fundraiser at Playhouse on the Square.
- Help create short videos
- Help with development of CAC style guide & rollout; crisis communication procedure; expanding our media referral list
- Content for twitter, Facebook, and email marketing
