Municipal Reporter I – (Woodland Park) – The Record has an opening for a Reporter I covering municipalities. Duties include covering assigned beats, regular municipal and school board meetings, and ongoing news issues, such as downtown development or municipal programs.  Will also develop and write feature stories. Must perform routine editorial tasks and share office duties.  Good oral and written communication skills, PC familiarity, and the ability to deal with others are necessary.  Must have transportation availability to cover assignments and be accessible for assignments during and outside regular office hours.  The successful candidate must have at least two years of daily newspaper reporting experience, or equivalent.

Assignment Editor – (Woodland Park) –The Record has an opening for an assignment editor. We’re looking for candidates with strong news judgment, top-flight language skills, and a true appreciation for the reporting/editing partnership. We want an editor with a sense of urgency in covering all manner of developing news — the ability to move quickly and surely as events unfold, to make clear assignments and to offer inspired guidance not only in gathering the news but in editing stories effectively on deadline. Front-end editing is essential. We want an editor who can help define and focus beats, spot regional trends, run with stories beyond the initial hits and encourage hard-hitting enterprise off the news. We want someone who can help his or her staff meet uniformly high standards without sacrificing individuality. Position requires five to seven years of experience, or its equivalent, in editing and/or reporting daily and enterprise news stories; A demonstrated capacity for recognizing what makes a story and when an event is newsworthy; Expertise, however gained, in the beats for which the editor is responsible; A working knowledge of good photography, graphics, and page design; A bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent.  We want someone who gets really excited by a great story.

Reporter II (Woodland Park) – The Record has an immediate opening for a full-time rewrite Reporter II. We’re looking for a skilled writer who can respond immediately when a big story breaks – fulfilling all manner of roles that include taking feeds from reporters in the field to weave into a definitive account or contributing to that coverage through interviews, research and contacts. We need someone who is adept at handling an array of overnight assignments, both big and small, sometimes juggling several at once. A sense of urgency, speed, strong news judgment and a truly collaborative nature are key.  So, too, is the ability to stay on top of news in both North Jersey and New Jersey so that he or she can jump into a developing story without missing a beat. And for those times when news isn’t hopping, we want someone who can find strong enterprise story ideas and execute them with flair and depth. The job involves afternoon and night hours. A minimum of three years daily reporting experience, or equivalent, is required.

We’re looking for a self-starter who can break news as well as cover breaking news, propose and execute enterprise ideas, spot significant regional trends and move quickly and surely to contribute developing stories to the Web. The ability to write clean, clear and accurate copy is critical. And of course, we’re looking for a team player who will complement and enhance the excellent work of our current team of municipal reporters. Specialty Writer – (Trenton) – The Trenton Bureau has an opening for a full time Specialty Writer to cover a broad range of state issues and the people who run state government. The bureau covers important breaking news and breaks news of its own, but puts a heavy emphasis on enterprise – telling readers not only what is happening in the State House but why it’s happening and what it means to them here in North Jersey. At least five years of daily reporting experience is required. Prior experience covering state and county governments are pluses.

Reporter II – (Woodland Park) – The Features Department has an opening for a full-time Reporter II covering entertainment.  We’re looking for a self-starter who can report and write engaging stories that explore a variety of entertainment topics, propose and execute in-depth enterprise ideas, spot significant entertainment trends at an early stage and move quickly and surely to contribute developing stories to the Web. The successful candidate must have at least three years of daily reporting experience, or its equivalent, and demonstrate both broad and in-depth knowledge and expertise regarding entertainment. In addition, the candidate must have in-depth experience in social media – blogs, Twitter, apps, and she/he must work with the Features’ department senior management in formulating strategies to capture readers and have the ability to carry out that strategy. The ideal candidate should also have knowledge of the arts, pop and culture scene in New Jersey, notably Northern New Jersey, as well as critical writing expertise.

Reporter II – (Woodland Park) – The Record’s Business Department is seeking a Reporter II to cover breaking news and trends, and write enterprise on a wide variety of business topics.  The candidate should be a self-starter who is current on trends and issues that affect business, with a firm grasp of business fundamentals and a strong interest in developing his or her expertise. The candidate will be expected to produce hard-hitting enterprise for the Sunday business section and A-1. A minimum of three years of daily business writing experience, or its equivalent, is required. We highly value candidates who can develop their own stories and who can explain complex topics with clear, concise, and compelling writing.
