Access and Diversity Support Awards for Internships

The University of Memphis Scholarship Committee has provided funding for several undergraduate awards for Access and Diversity Internships for Summer 2012. Selected students will be provided the opportunity to work with a campus or community partner to enhance the student’s career preparation and to assist in the organization’s efforts to offer appropriate services and/or products to clients.

If you are interested in applying for an internship, please review the information below and submit the attached application form by February 3, 2012.

Who is eligible to apply for an award for an internship?

Undergraduate students who meet the following criteria:

  • are Tennessee Residents (Paid in-state tuition for Spring 2012)
  • have a minimum of 60 earned hours at time of application
  • have a minimum of 3.00 grade point average at time of application


  • are certified by the TRiO Programs as being in compliance with TRiO requirements.  Students in TRiO Programs are first generation, low income, or students with disabilities. For more information about TRiO Programs, please visit


Non TRiO students who meet ONE of the following criteria: 

  • Resident from one of the following rural West Tennessee counties: Benton, Carroll, Chester, Crockett, Decatur, Dyer, Fayette, Gibson, Hardeman, Hardin, Haywood, Henderson, Henry, Lake, Lauderdale, Madison, McNairy, Obion, Tipton, or Weakly
  • 1st generation student (neither parent graduated from college)
  • Member of an historically underrepresented race/ethnicity (African American, American Indian, Asian, or Hispanic)
  • Eligible for a Pell grant
  • Registered with Student Disability Services

What does an internship require?

Students selected for an Access and Diversity Award for Internship are required to:

  • participate in an Internship Preparation Workshop
  • complete an approved internship learning contract and register for an
    o   Internship Course in Academic Major or
    o   UNIV 4000 – Community Internship
  • work 150 clock hours during the summer (June 4 – August 9)
  • present internship experience at Student Affairs Access/Diversity Support Awards for Internships Recognition Event

What do selected students receive?

  • Selected students will receive a summer award of $1500 to apply towards the cost of tuition and fees, including those fees related to an academic internship.  After ALL fees have been satisfied for the semester, any excess aid will be released to the student by either direct deposit or paper check. Please refer to the Bursar’s Office Calendar for disbursement dates.

Where do selected interns work?

Students who are selected to receive the Student Affairs Access/Diversity Support Awards for Internships may work with a campus or community partner such as the Fogelman College of Business & Economics, Memphis Zoo, Memphis Botanic Gardens, Memphis Red Cross, College of Engineering, College of Arts and Sciences, Athletics, Memphis Area Women’s Council, etc.

How do students apply for an internship?

Complete and submit an application to Courtney Cook, by 3:30 p.m., Friday, February 3, 2012.
